The news as it trends.
In a recent live video interview, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, accused the Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio of making sexual advances towards her.
She claimed that her troubles in the Senate began after she rejected Akpabio’s advances.
This revelation has sparked significant controversy and raised questions about the conduct of high-ranking officials in Nigeria.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is married to Emmanuel Uduaghan, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio is married to Ekaette Unoma Akpabio.
In the interview with Arise TV, Senator Natasha mentioned that there was a time she met with the Nigerian Senate President in his office over a national-related issue, during which Akpabio told her point-blank, “Natasha, I am the chief presiding officer of the Senate. You can get a whole lot if you take care of me and make me happy,” essentially accusing Senator Akpabio of soliciting for sexual favors.
In the same interview, Senator Akpoti reiterated that she had informed her husband about the advances.
When the Senate President traveled to London, her husband met him there to plead with him to back off from this dangerous thought.
It is worth noting that the Nigerian political system does have laws addressing sexual harassment, but there is no direct national legislation specifically targeting this issue.
However, the National Industrial Court has taken steps to protect individuals from sexual harassment by interpreting it as a violation of fundamental human rights.
The implications of these accusations, if corroborated, could lead to serious consequences for Akpabio, including potential legal action and damage to his political career.
As this controversy circulates on social media, there is a call for stronger legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms to address sexual harassment in Nigeria’s political sphere.
