The ex-Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has expressed his belief that the Nigerian Government has the financial capacity to cover any amount set as the new national minimum wage.
Despite the initial demand of ₦494,000 by Organised Labour, which was later reduced to ₦250,000, the government’s offer stood at ₦62,000.
However, state governors have voiced their inability to pay the proposed ₦62,000.
In response to this situation, Lamido, speaking on Channels Television on Monday, pointed out that if the government could allocate ₦17 trillion for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway without the approval of the National Assembly, then it should be able to meet any minimum wage requirement.
He emphasized that Nigeria possesses abundant resources and can address any challenges by allocating the necessary funds.
Lamido highlighted, “If the government can undertake a project worth ₦17 trillion without following the due process, it indicates that the funds are available.
How can a project of such magnitude be executed without proper budgeting or legislative approval? This demonstrates that there is sufficient money.
However, in light of the organized labor union’s push for a national wage agreement with the Nigerian government, some policy analysts are now casting doubt on the validity of Lamidos’ assertion.
They are questioning the feasibility of Nigeria supporting such high wages, especially when the country is allocating 93% of its generated revenue towards servicing its debts as of 2022.
