To the bewilderment of property owners in Abuja, the federal capital of Nigeria, on April 24, 2025,
the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested Nwobo Williams Chibuike, a popular realtor from Ebonyi State, for allegedly scamming people with fake land deals in Abuja.
Chibuike is accused of selling non-existent plots in prime areas such as Kurudu, Guzape 2, and Kuje, charging victims millions of naira for land that doesn’t exist.
The EFCC’s investigation revealed that none of the marketed plots were genuine, as confirmed by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).
In Nigeria, where fingerprints for national identity cards or licenses are mostly not mandated, Chibuike operated under multiple companies and aliases, making him difficult to track initially.
The implications of this scam are widespread.
Victims have lost life savings, while critics argue that the case highlights systemic issues in Nigeria’s real estate sector.
Advocacy groups are now calling for stricter regulations to protect citizens.
The arrest of Chibuike has left many property owners shocked as he was driven away in handcuffs.
Some property owners are now advising the public to be cautious, urging potential buyers to verify land documents carefully and beware of fraudulent vendors.
