The news as it trends.
Despite ongoing negotiations, Russia launched a significant drone attack on Ukraine, including Kyiv, which resulted in casualties and damage today, February 17, 2025.
This attack happened just before high-level talks between the U.S. and Russia in Saudi Arabia.
Putin’s objectives with the new war launched, according to critics, appear to remain consistent: maintaining control over occupied territories and exerting influence over Ukraine.
The Kremlin has ruled out any territorial swaps, indicating that Russia is not willing to give up the territories it has occupied from Ukraine, and neither is Ukraine ready to give up its territorial land.
This stance complicates peace negotiations and raises concerns about Russia’s long-term intentions in the region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s objectives in Ukraine have been a topic of much discussion and analysis.
Broadly speaking, his goals can be categorized into three main areas:
Firstly, he aims to weaken Ukraine’s ties with NATO. Putin has long opposed NATO’s expansion eastward and sees Ukraine’s potential membership as a threat to Russia’s security.
Secondly, he seeks to stymie Ukrainian nationalism. Putin aims to prevent Ukraine from developing a strong national identity that could challenge Russian influence.
Finally, he is focused on expanding territorial gains. This includes maintaining control over annexed territories and potentially gaining more territory.
Despite setbacks, Putin continues to insist that his goals will be achieved.
His strategy involves a combination of military action, political pressure, and diplomatic maneuvers.
The ongoing war in Ukraine has resulted in a tragically high number of casualties.
According to the latest available data, the combined death toll of Ukrainian and Russian soldiers, as well as Ukrainian civilians, stands at approximately 147,459.
However, the true number is likely much higher due to the ongoing nature of the conflict and the difficulty in obtaining accurate information from both sides, according to reports.
Although the current Ukraine-Russia peace negotiations are taking place in Saudi Arabia, with the U.S. and Russian officials taking center stage in high-level talks in Riyadh to discuss ending the war in Ukraine,
it’s important to note that Ukrainian officials are not part of these initial discussions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed frustration that Ukraine was not included in these discussions.
He emphasized that any decisions about Ukraine’s future should involve Ukraine directly.
European allies, including the U.K., Lithuania, and Germany, have also criticized the U.S. for sidelining Ukraine, meeting with their foreign leaders to discuss Ukraine vis-à-vis Russia without Ukraine being present at the table.
The exclusion of Ukraine from these peace talks has raised a lot of eyebrows and criticism.
A new video has also emerged online with everyday Ukrainian soldiers vowing to defend their country.
According to the video, a negotiation without Ukraine at the table will be unacceptable.
The main reason given by the U.S. Under Secretary Marco Rubio was that the talks are primarily focused on restoring U.S.-Russia relations and preparing for a potential meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly opposed this approach, stating that any decisions about Ukraine should involve Ukraine directly.
With the latest demand from the U.S. asking Ukraine to give up almost 50% of its minerals, it is likely that the meeting will proceed successfully with Zelensky’s refusal to give up its natural resources to appease any country or have any country dialogue about peace talks between Ukraine and Russia with Ukraine missing at the table.
European allies, including the U.K., Lithuania, and Germany, have also criticized the U.S. for sidelining Ukraine.
The situation, as it is in world politics, is complex, and many believe that excluding Ukraine could undermine the legitimacy and effectiveness of any agreements reached.
