The Australian government announced plans to restrict the influx of foreign students in the upcoming year, aiming to address ongoing immigration challenges.

Education Minister Jason Clare disclosed that the cap for new international student enrollments across universities, higher education, and vocational training will be set at 270,000 for 2025.

Clare highlighted that this decision would lead to variations in student enrollment numbers among universities from this year to the next, as the government shifts away from a previous policy that favored low-risk students for visa compliance.

Official data reveals that international students contributed over Aus$42 billion (US$28 billion) to the Australian education sector in 2023, making it the second-largest industry after mining.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the sector’s significance but cautioned against universities relying too heavily on international student enrollment due to potential migration concerns.

According to the report, during the fiscal year that concluded on June 30, 2023, Australian authorities granted over 577,000 international student visas, which require modification.
