The news as it trends.

Dr. Ikenna Erinne, a 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist based in the United States, tragically took his own life after losing a prolonged and contentious child support case against his ex-wife, Suzzette Chibuogu Van-Lare, according to multiple reports.

The court ordered him to pay $15,000 monthly in child support, which placed a severe financial burden on him, a social media post alleged.

Dr. Erinne had also lost his medical license due to the case, further exacerbating his financial and emotional stress.

On January 26, 2025, after losing the custody battle, Dr. Erinne held his ex-wife and their children at gunpoint for three hours.

The nanny managed to escape and called the police, who arrived at the scene.

Dr. Erinne then took his own life.

Francis Van-Lare, who happens to be Suzzette’s father, issued a statement revealing these details and expressing his sorrow over the tragic incident.

Immediately after Francis Van-Lare, known as PoiMaster on social media, issued his statement, many online sympathizers responded with condolences, while some also criticized the situation.

See some of their comments below.

Suzzette Chibuogu Van-Lare, who was the estranged wife of Dr. Erinne, was born on June 15, 1990.

She is a 34-year-old Physician Assistant (Psychiatry) with a Doctorate in Medical Science (DMSc), according to her profile on ZocDoc.

She has a decade of experience managing behavioral health conditions in various clinical settings, including inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospitals, and private practice.

This heartbreaking event has sparked discussions about the systemic issues within the legal system that disproportionately affect African American men and the African Nigerian diaspora, and the immense pressures faced by individuals in contentious child support and custody battles, especially with a $15,000 monthly payment for child support and the loss of a medical license in the midst of controversies.
