The news as it trends.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State welcomed three men who were recently freed after spending 26 years on death row at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison.
The men were wrongfully convicted in 1999 over a disputed generator sale and sentenced to death in 2003.
Their release came after a viral social media campaign led to legal intervention and national attention.
Otti, widely praised for his compassion and advocacy, pledged full support for their reintegration into society.
The emotional meeting underscored the power of digital activism and the urgent need for justice reform in Nigeria.
Kolawole Oladeji and Ogbona Igbojionu were arrested in Ogun State in 1999 after a stolen generator was brought to Oladeji’s workshop for repairs.
Despite maintaining their innocence, they were tried and sentenced to death by hanging.
The main suspect, Segun Ajibade, was reportedly pardoned in 2016 by then-Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, yet Oladeji and Igbojionu remained imprisoned.
In 2020, Oladeji petitioned Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for clemency, but no action was taken.
The case resurfaced in 2025 after a viral TikTok campaign by content creator Olumide Ogunsanwo, known as Seaking.
Though the crime occurred in Ogun State, Governor Otti used his platform to amplify the case and worked with Governor Abiodun to help secure their release.
All three men have now regained their freedom.
However, only two were able to visit Governor Otti in person.
The third, whose name has not been disclosed in some reports, was reportedly unable to attend the meeting due to personal or logistical reasons.
