Oba Akeem Owoade, the newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, has returned to Nigeria from Canada to embark on a significant chapter in his life.

This phase marks the beginning of his journey as the 46th Alaafin and the esteemed custodian of Yoruba culture and heritage.

Having officially received his staff of office and certificate of appointment from the Oyo State Governor on January 13, 2025, Oba Owoade is already recognized as the rightful king.

However, the upcoming traditional rites and ceremonies are crucial to strengthening his spiritual and cultural ties to the throne.

His coronation ceremony is scheduled for April 5, 2025, after he completes all the necessary sacred rituals.

Oba Owoade, aged 49, was born on July 17, 1975, according to his profile.

He is married to Olori Abiwumi Owoade, and together they have three children.

Before ascending the throne, he had a remarkable career spanning various industries, including energy, banking, engineering, and real estate.

In Canada, he worked as a project coordinator at Manitoba Hydro, a major utility provider.

His professional journey also included serving as a teller at Oceanic Bank International Plc in Nigeria, a planning engineer at Oil Reach Company in Glasgow, UK, and the president of a real estate investment and financial services business in Manitoba.

The selection of Oba Owoade as Alaafin of Oyo reflects the age-old traditions of Yoruba culture.

The Oyomesi, a council of kingmakers, is responsible for nominating candidates from the recognized ruling houses.

Their choice is then presented to the Oyo State Government, which formally confirms the appointment by issuing the staff of office.

This meticulous process ensures that both cultural heritage and modern governance are respected.

Despite living abroad, Oba Owoade’s lineage and qualifications made him a fitting candidate for the throne, according to reports and tradition.

His return to Nigeria and his dedication to fulfilling the traditional rites demonstrate his commitment to upholding the rich heritage of the Oyo Kingdom.

The people of Oyo have warmly embraced their monarch’s return, celebrating his vision to lead with wisdom and unity for generations to come.
