The news as it trends.
Segun Sowunmi, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, has addressed criticism over his recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, insisting it was not an act of disloyalty to Atiku Abubakar.
Atiku Abubakar is the former presidential candidate of the PDP party.
Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign, stated that he remains independent within the PDP and is not bound to any individual.
At 57 years old, Sowunmi is a political analyst and strategist known for his outspoken views. His visit has fueled discussions about political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Adding to the speculation, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose was also seen visiting Tinubu at his Lagos residence.
Fayose, once a strong critic of past administrations, expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, further reinforcing questions about cross-party alliances.
His presence, alongside Sowunmi’s, highlights a shifting political landscape in Nigeria, as prominent PDP figures engage with the ruling party despite their previous disagreements vis-à-vis affiliations.
Some political analysts suggest that politics in Nigeria, under Tinubu, as opposed to how Nigerian politics originally operated, may no longer be a “do-or-die” affair, with politicians increasingly prioritizing individual interests over party loyalty.
These developments have raised questions about the future of opposition politics and whether Tinubu’s influence could reshape Nigeria’s political dynamics leading up to 2027.
Although there has been backlash on social media over Sowunmi’s visit to Tinubu, being in an opposition party, some political analysts in Nigeria view the visits of both Sowunmi and Fayose as underscoring the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where strategic engagements often signal broader realignments and shifting alliances.
As Tinubu’s Aso Rock Presidential Villa becomes the new Mecca of political discourse and common sense, with a political approach to fixing decades of military destabilization of Nigeria’s economy and political system, the growing interactions between PDP figures and Tinubu’s camp continue to spark intense debate as the country moves toward its next election cycle.
It remains unclear whether Peter Obi will follow suit by paying a visit to Tinubu of Lagos. 😹
