After four decades of legal turmoil, a sessions court in Mumbai has acquitted a 70-year-old man of charges related to the kidnapping and rape of a minor girl.
The court’s decision came to light when it was revealed that the man and the alleged victim had not only eloped but also married and raised four children together.
This significant turn of events has brought closure to a case that began in 1984 when the complainant reported her daughter missing after she claimed she was going to the bathroom.
The court proceedings, which resumed this August after the accused was located and brought to trial, faced challenges due to the passage of time.
Many witnesses had either passed away or could not be found, leaving only two to testify. One witness, a cousin of the alleged victim, confirmed that the couple had lived together in Agra and that the complainant had not signed the original complaint due to her lack of education.
The court ultimately concluded that the evidence was insufficient to support the claims of kidnapping or rape, emphasizing the need to resolve such aged cases promptly.
