Dubem Amene, a Nigerian athlete born in the United States, has announced his retirement from competitive athletics at the young age of 21, following the disqualification of the men’s 4x400m relay team from the Paris 2024 Olympics final.
Amene was part of the Nigerian relay squad alongside Ifeanyi Ojeli, Ezekiel Nathaniel, and Chidi Okezie, and they had successfully advanced to the final by finishing second in heat 2 with a season-best time of 2:59.81.
Unfortunately, their dreams were shattered when the team faced disqualification due to a lane violation by Ojeli, who ran the first leg before handing off to Nathaniel.
In light of this setback, Amene, who claimed the national title at the Nigerian Olympic trials in Benin earlier this year, has chosen to retire from athletics to pursue a career in finance, having fulfilled his lifelong goal of becoming an Olympian.
At just 21, he graduated from the University of Michigan in June with a degree in Economics and is now ready to embark on his professional journey
