Peter Obi, a Nigerian politician and a former governor of Anambra states has called for an immediate investigation following Team Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the Paris Olympics, where the team concluded the event without securing any medals.

According to the ongoing events in France, despite sending a contingent of 88 athletes to compete in 12 different sports, none were able to achieve a podium finish. Notably, Tobi Amusan, who led the team, also failed to qualify for the finals in the 100m hurdles, further highlighting the team’s struggles.

In a statement shared on his X account, Obi expressed his dissatisfaction with the leadership that has led to such a lackluster outcome, particularly in light of the significant financial resources allocated to the Olympic endeavor.

He pointed out the stark contrast between Nigeria’s investment of approximately N12 billion and the success of other nations, such as Jamaica, which spent a fraction of that amount yet secured six medals.

Obi emphasized the need for accountability regarding the substantial funds expended without any tangible results, urging a reevaluation of the management and strategies employed in preparing for international competitions.

According to Peter Obi, the prevalence of unfortunate narratives in Nigeria can be attributed to a systemic preference for favoritism over meritocracy, which has hindered the nation’s progress.

A pertinent example is Favour Ofili, a dedicated Nigerian sprinter who devoted years of training in preparation for the 2024 Olympics, only to have her name inexplicably and unjustly removed from the roster of competitors for the 100m event by the relevant sporting authorities.

This incident raises questions about the integrity of the selection process and the impact of administrative negligence on the careers of promising athletes.

Similarly, the case of Annette Echikunwoke, a former Nigerian hammer thrower, illustrates the consequences of such mismanagement. Frustrated by the actions of certain officials, she opted to represent the United States, ultimately achieving success by winning a medal at the Olympics.

This pattern of administrative incompetence has previously denied numerous athletes the chance to compete, as seen during the Tokyo 2020 Games. It is disheartening to learn that some officials, along with unfit athletes, have exploited national resources for personal gain while genuine competitors struggle for basic support. I

It is imperative for the government to conduct a thorough investigation into these misconducts and ensure accountability, fostering a culture of discipline and commitment that prioritizes competence and capacity for the betterment of the nation.
