The news as it trends
Former Nigerian Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora has died following a medical emergency in Abuja.
The tragedy unfolded at Nizamiye Hospital, where he was denied critical surgery due to an unpaid balance of $15,000.
The hospital had demanded full payment of a $30,000 bill before proceeding, according to reports.
Despite efforts by family and politicians—including Governor Mohammed Bago—to raise the funds, the delay proved fatal.
Kontagora represented Niger North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015. His death has sparked outrage over healthcare access and hospital policies.
He is survived by his wife and children and will be buried after Islamic rites at the National Mosque.
While the exact nature of the surgery remains undisclosed, the incident has raised serious concerns about emergency healthcare access and hospital billing practices in Nigeria.
