Aremu Timothy Adegboyega, a 55-year-old Nigerian trader, has been deported from Ghana after being convicted of smuggling over $100,000 worth of counterfeit CFA francs into the country.

He was arrested at the Aflao border while riding as a passenger on a motorcycle and attempting to enter Ghana through an unauthorized crossing point known as Beat Zero.

Customs officers found bundles of fake currency in his backpack, including CFA francs totaling over 80 million and Nigerian naira worth ₦101,500.

Adegboyega admitted to receiving the counterfeit notes from a Nigerian contact under the direction of a suspected mafia figure based in Côte d’Ivoire.

He was convicted by a Circuit Court in Accra on two counts: possession of forged notes and illegal entry.

The court fined him GH¢3,000 for the counterfeit currency and GH¢1,440 for illegal entry.

If he fails to pay either fine, he will serve up to two years in prison with hard labor.

However, the court ruled that the sentences would run concurrently, meaning a maximum of two years in total if unpaid.

Regardless of whether he pays the fines or serves time, the court also ordered his immediate deportation to Nigeria.

The Ghana Immigration Service has been directed to carry out the deportation without delay.
