A Nigerian man named Okezie Ogbata has been apprehended and arraigned before a district court in Florida, United States, in a significant crackdown on international fraud.

The Nigerian national is accused of defrauding more than 400 elderly and vulnerable victims of over $6 million through a transnational inheritance fraud scheme.

According to the Department of Justice, the suspect and his co-conspirators sent letters falsely claiming that the recipients were entitled to receive a multimillion-dollar inheritance from a deceased family member overseas.

The victims were instructed to send money for delivery fees, taxes, and other payments to avoid questioning from government authorities.

The suspect has pled guilty to the charges and admitted to defrauding over $6 million from more than 400 victims.

He is scheduled to be sentenced by a US District Judge on April 14, 2025, with the possibility of a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
