A new report released by Peel Regional Police is now trending as Toronto police arrest Chimezie Nwabueze, a 28-year-old Nigerian national, for allegedly defrauding two victims of over $600,000 in an elaborate romance scam.
Posing as an oil magnate, Nwabueze convinced his victims—whom he met online—that he urgently needed funds for his supposed oil rig in the Middle East.
He promised repayment and an eventual meeting, but after receiving the money, he cut off all communication.
Authorities believe he is part of a larger criminal network targeting vulnerable individuals on dating platforms.
