Nigeria Mourns an Icon of Democracy: Pa Ayodele Adebanjo Passes at 96.

Chief Ayodele Adebanjo, a distinguished Nigerian politician and elder statesman, passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.

He was a revered leader of the Afenifere group, recognized for his steadfast dedication to justice, democracy, and national unity in Nigeria.

His death represents a profound loss for the nation, as he was instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, especially during critical periods of national turmoil.

Adebanjo’s political journey commenced in the 1950s when he became a member of the Action Group, a political party pivotal to Nigeria’s independence movement.

He held the position of Assistant Secretary of Egbe Omo Oduduwa, a Yoruba socio-cultural organization.

Transitioning into journalism, he contributed to the Daily Service, which further solidified his involvement with the Action Group, ultimately leading to his role as General Secretary.

In pursuit of higher education, Adebanjo traveled to London to study law.

During the Western Region crisis in 1962, he was compelled to seek refuge in Ghana, where he worked as a scriptwriter for Radio Ghana.

In the 1990s, he emerged as a prominent figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which opposed military rule and championed the restoration of democracy in Nigeria & his efforts were vital in facilitating the return to civilian governance.

As a leader of Afenifere, Adebanjo was a vigorous proponent of true federalism and advocated for the restructuring of Nigeria.

Pa Adebanjo was united in marriage with Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo and was the father of several children, including Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.

He is also remembered by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Born in Isanya Ogbo, located near Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, Nigeria, his legacy embodies a commitment to the principles of democracy, justice, and national unity.

His contributions have significantly influenced Nigeria’s political sphere.

His steadfast adherence to democratic ideals garnered him widespread respect and admiration.

Notable Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, have paid homage to his significant contributions.
