The news as it trends.
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, 33, a vibrant new force in city politics, is facing a disturbing wave of threats—including robocalls and voicemails laced with anti-Muslim hate speech and even a bomb threat.
The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force launched an investigation after Mamdani’s Queens campaign office received multiple voicemails from an anonymous caller threatening to blow up his car—despite Mamdani not owning one.
The threats follow Mamdani’s viral confrontation with Trump’s border czar, which catapulted him into the national spotlight.
Since then, his campaign has reported a spike in racist abuse via phones, inboxes, and social media.
His team responded by hiring private security and temporarily disconnecting phone lines to protect staff.
No suspects have been named, but many believe these acts are politically motivated—potentially linked to Mamdani’s rising poll numbers and bold progressive platform.
As a young candidate energizing a wave of youth turnout, he’s seen by some as a serious threat to the political establishment.
With early voting underway and 67-year-old former Governor Andrew Cuomo as his top rival, tensions are clearly escalating.
Mamdani responded by urging supporters to stay strong. “This isn’t just about one candidate,” he said.
“It’s a reminder of how hate and fear are weaponized in politics.” Nevertheless, his campaign says he remains focused on his campaign promise: a ‘safe and affordable New York.’”
