The renowned Nigerian musician, King Sunny Ade, has pledged to honor Onyeka Onwenu’s legacy by performing their beloved duet, “Waiting for Me,” for the rest of his life, ensuring her memory lives on through music.
Onyeka Onwenu was 72 when she passed away.
During a condolence visit to her family by the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) in Ikoyi, Lagos State, King Sunny Ade committed to performing their collaborative song every day of his life.
He stated, “I will sing ‘Waiting for Me’ in her honor for as long as I live. I have performed it numerous times across various countries, always giving her the recognition she deserves.
In our musical partnership, she often took the lead, guiding me with her talent and vision.”
Orits Williki, a well-known reggae artist, also reflected on Onyeka’s dedication to justice, noting, “She was unforgettable. It’s unfortunate that she didn’t fully enjoy the fruits of her labor.
Just a few years ago, she won a significant Supreme Court ruling on intellectual property, but it’s heartbreaking that she is no longer with us, even as her legacy remains alive in our hearts.”
