Despite a court order for his release, Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, remains in custody following a defamation case involving fellow artist Burna Boy.

The Federal High Court had directed the Nigerian Police to release Speed Darlington immediately, pending the hearing of the substantive matter.

However, hours after the court order, Speed Darlington was not released.

Speed Darlington, also known by other names such as Akpi and Scorpion King, is recognized for his unique blend of Afrobeats, hip-hop, and African popular music, as well as his eccentric personality and controversial content on social media.

The case centers around Speed Darlington’s comments about Burna Boy on social media, which led to charges of defamation and cyberstalking.

The court held that Darlington’s arrest and incarceration were a gross violation of his rights to dignity, liberty, expression, and mobility under Chapter IV of the Nigerian Constitution.

The court further appointed Abubakar Marshal, Esq., as surety for Speed Darlington.

Speed Darlington’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the court’s ruling on social media, emphasizing the importance of the court’s directive.

Despite this, Speed Darlington remains in detention, sparking concerns among his supporters and legal advocates.
