The news as it trends.
In a surprising turn of events in Lagos politics, per media reports, Oluwagbenga Abiola, Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government in Lagos State, has withdrawn from the chairmanship race in favor of Abdulganiyu Obasa, the son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
This decision has sparked conversations about loyalty, political mentorship, and the dynamics of power within the ruling party.
Abiola, a prominent figure in the local political scene, expressed unwavering loyalty to Speaker Obasa, crediting him for shaping his political career.
From being appointed as a special assistant in 2015 to becoming the youngest council boss in Lagos State, Abiola’s rise has been closely tied to Obasa’s influence. However, when it was time for him to run for office, he prioritized loyalty over representation.
According to him, “I will never go against my leader,” Abiola stated, emphasizing his gratitude and respect for the Speaker’s guidance.
While some see Abiola’s decision as a testament to his loyalty and respect for party unity, others question whether such moves undermine democratic principles.
Abdulganiyu Obasa’s candidacy has been framed as a reward for his father’s contributions to the community, but critics on Nigerian blogs and social media argue that it raises concerns about favoritism and the concentration of power within political families.
Abiola, however, remains optimistic about his future, pledging to continue serving the party and the people of Agege.
He believes that greater opportunities lie ahead and has instructed his supporters to rally behind the party’s decision.
