Maria Branyas Morera, recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest living person, has passed away in Spain at the age of 117, as confirmed by her family on Tuesday.
Born in the United States, Morera experienced the tumult of two world wars throughout her lifetime.
Her family shared that she departed peacefully in her sleep, just as she had wished, and expressed her desire for those she left behind not to mourn her passing.
They fondly remembered her for her wisdom and kindness, highlighting the impact she had on their lives.
For the past twenty years, Morera resided in the Santa Maria del Tura nursing home located in Olot, northeastern Spain.
Just a day before her death, she conveyed her feelings of weakness through a social media post, reiterating her wish for no tears or suffering on her behalf.
Following her passing, the title of the world’s oldest living person has now been passed to Tomiko Itooka from Japan, who is currently 116 years old.
The quest for the oldest person has been marred by controversies, particularly in Africa, where many individuals believed to have lived nearly 120 years remain unrecognized in official records.
