French authorities have announced the extension of Pavel Durov’s detention following his arrest at Le Bourget airport in Paris on Saturday night according to AFP.
Durov, the CEO of Telegram, faces serious allegations including drug trafficking, child sexual abuse material sales, and fraud linked to the messaging platform.
Prosecutors confirmed that Durov will remain in police custody for an additional 48 hours as investigations continue.
The founder of Telegram, who holds citizenship in France and the UAE, is also being scrutinized for potential involvement in organized crime and terrorism promotion.
In a related development, and the fact that Durov also holds UAE citizenship, the United Arab Emirates has halted a contract to acquire 80 fighter jets from France in light of Durov’s arrest, as reported by Al Jazeera.
