As it trends.

As the back-and-forth between Trump and Harvard continues, Harvard University issued a strong statement on Friday, condemning President Donald Trump’s threat to revoke its tax-exempt status, calling the move “highly illegal.”

President Alan Garber responded in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, addressing the legal concerns surrounding Trump’s announcement.

Trump had announced on Truth Social that Harvard “deserves” to lose its exemption due to student activism and political disagreements.

Harvard President Alan Garber warned that such an action would severely impact education and research, setting a dangerous precedent for universities nationwide.

Legal experts predict Harvard will challenge the decision in court, arguing it violates constitutional protections.

According to Garber, “Tax-exempt status is granted to educational institutions to enable them to successfully carry out their mission of education, and for research universities, of research.

Obviously, that would be severely impaired if we were to lose our tax-exempt status. And I should add, it would be destructive to Harvard, but the message that it sends to the educational community would be a very dire one, suggesting that political disagreements could be used as a basis to pose what might be called an existential threat to so many educational institutions.”
