If you missed it.
A recent controversy has emerged on social media involving Chidimma Adetshina, a South African contestant who was recently barred from participating.
The situation has intensified, leading to potential deportation for Chidimma and her mother, as well as the possibility of losing their citizenship.
Chidimma’s father, Michael Adetshina, has been recognized as a Nigerian businessman, while her mother’s identity remains undisclosed, despite Chidimma having shared images of her on her Instagram Stories Live.
According to Chidimma, her parents met in Johannesburg in the late 1990s and later moved to Pimville, Johannesburg, where they resided with her maternal grandmother.
She characterizes her mother as South African with Mozambican roots, claiming that both she and her mother were born in South Africa, which she believes qualifies her for South African citizenship by descent.
However, after extensive investigation over the past few weeks, it has come to light that her statements may be false, as it appears her mother has assumed the identity of another individual, thereby rendering her ineligible for South African citizenship.
In light of this ongoing situation, the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa has visited the individual whose identity was allegedly appropriated in Tshwane.
They have issued a letter under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act to Chidimma’s biological mother to expedite the investigation, but reports indicate that her mother has yet to appear.
At present, Chidimma Adetshina is still regarded a South African citizen.
However, with the confirmation that her mother’s ID is indeed fraudulent, it suggests that Adetshina’s citizenship is obtained on deceitful grounds, making her liable for deportation, as previously emphasized.
In the latest video after the conclusion on the investigation.
Advocate Constance Moitse, who heads the counter-corruption unit of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (the Hawks), remarked,
“An innocent South African mother, whose identity may have been misappropriated in the alleged fraud perpetrated by Adetshina’s mother, has faced significant repercussions & distress.
She was unable to register her own child at birth.”
The mother, whose identity is suspected to have been stolen, applied for an identification document in Tshwane in 1995.
The first sign of irregularity occurred when she attempted to collect the document and was informed that it was available for pickup in Johannesburg.
Six years later, upon giving birth, she discovered that a child had already been registered under her name and ID number—this child being Adetshina.
For several months, she worked to rectify the situation, and ultimately, the department issued her a new ID number, allowing her to register her child.
As the case unfolds, a significant number of South Africans on social media have voiced their apprehensions.
One individual has claimed that Chidimma Adetshina has been married twice, allegedly utilizing fraudulent citizenship to aid her boyfriend’s immigration to South Africa.
Many commentators from South Africa have insisted that both Chidimma and her mother should face deportation.
Investigators according to the video provided, have noted that Chidimma is likely to become stateless following the revocation of her citizenship, while her father will also be subjected to further examination as the investigation seeks to clarify the circumstances surrounding his entry into South Africa.
Observers and other critics have raised concerns about whether this situation could have been easily averted had her mother taken the initiative to present her side of the story alongside legal representatives.
There is also speculation about whether Chidimma should have refrained from participating in the competition altogether, given the rigorous scrutiny involved in assessing the identity and background of contestants, especially in a competition that features numerous participants from the same region, given that Chidimma’s name also appears notably foreign compared to the typical South African names of her fellow competitors.
For more information, please refer to the video below, which outlines the investigators’ plans to revoke her citizenship and that of her mother, as well as to initiate a separate investigation concerning her father.
