For this Couple, their New Year Turns Deadly for Hiring a Driver Who Eventually Killed Them.
In a tragic event on New Year’s Day in 2023, Kehinde Fatinoye, a former employee of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), his wife Bukola, and their son Oreoluwa attended the 2022/2023 crossover service at Christ Anglican Church Iporo-Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
They returned home in high spirits, unaware that they were being followed.
Around 1:30 am, their residence on Oba Karunwi Road, behind former Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s home in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, was invaded.
The couple was gruesomely murdered, and their house was set ablaze.
The attackers also tied their biological son, Oreoluwa, and their adopted son, Felix, with ropes and threw them into a river along Obada Road, resulting in one of the children’s tragic death.
Lekan, who had been the couple’s driver since 2018, confessed during interrogation to planning the incident because his requests for a salary raise and a loan had been ignored.
He stated, “I just wanted to collect money from them.
They employed me as a driver but later added home cleaning, washing clothes, and feeding the dog to my duties.
I asked for a raise in my salary after these additional tasks.
I was being paid N25,000, which was not enough to feed myself and my family.
I also asked for a loan to be deducted from my salary for a year to raise money for an investment, but he did nothing. So, I decided to take my money from them.”
Lekan invited two of his friends, Ahmed Odetola, aka Akamo, and Waheed Adeniyi, aka Koffi, to join him in robbing the couple.
In February 2023, the suspects, along with their accomplices Fadairo Temitope and Adekanbi Adenike, were arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Abeokuta on an 11-count charge, including conspiracy, murder, felony, arson, theft, and escape from lawful authority.
Police Counsel Miss Oluwatosin Jackson moved a motion ex parte under Section 306 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Laws of Ogun State, seeking to remand the perpetrators of the crime for 60 days at Oba Correctional Centre, pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Magistrate Esther Idowu granted the request. Months later, Lekan’s aged mother, his wife, and two others who bought the deceased’s vehicle were brought back to court.
The case was transferred to the State High Court in Abeokuta, where the trial concluded.
Sources within the Correction Centre and the court revealed that the suspects are awaiting judgment on February 3, 2025, for the crime they committed between 2022 and 2023.
The public is now demanding answers, as it has been exactly two years since the family of Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye was wiped out, yet justice remains elusive for their tragic deaths.
