The news as it trends (Nigeria).

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Nigerian Minister of Aviation, has been acquitted and discharged of all charges in his long-running legal battles with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

On February 4, 2025, the Lagos State High Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe, delivered the final judgment, dismissing all charges against him.

Fani-Kayode faced multiple charges over the years. His original offence involved allegations of fraud and forgery.

He was accused of being involved in a N4.9 billion fraud case, with the EFCC charging him with misappropriating funds during his tenure as Minister of Aviation.

Additionally, he was charged with using forged medical reports to evade court appearances and procuring documents by false pretenses and fabricating evidence.

Despite these charges, Fani-Kayode was acquitted and discharged by the court, as the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against him.

In legal contexts, it refers to evidence that is sufficient to establish a fact or a case unless disproved by contrary evidence.

Essentially, if a case is “prima facie,” it means that there is enough evidence to support the claim, and it can proceed to trial unless the opposing party can present evidence to refute it.

Femi Fani-Kayode is a prominent Nigerian politician, lawyer, and author.

He has held several significant positions in the Nigerian government, including Minister of Culture and Tourism from June 22, 2006, to November 7, 2006, and Minister of Aviation from November 7, 2006, to May 29, 2007.

Fani-Kayode is known for his outspoken views and has been involved in various political and legal battles over the years.

He has a background in law, having studied at the University of London and Cambridge University.

He has also been a Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Today, Fani-Kayode announced his acquittal on his social media page, expressing his gratitude and relief over the verdict.

He stated that he has been in and out of court for the past 18 years and feels overjoyed to finally be free.
