Elon Musk closes operations in Brazil, which country is next?

X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, announced that it will cease its operations in Brazil, although users in the country will still have access to the service.

This decision comes in the wake of ongoing legal disputes with Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has attempted to restrict certain accounts on X as part of an investigation into election-related misinformation and alleged “digital militias.”

In a statement from X’s global government affairs account, the company revealed that Moraes has issued threats against their legal representative in Brazil, including the possibility of arrest for non-compliance with his censorship directives.

To ensure the safety of their employees, X has opted to terminate its operations in Brazil immediately, while still allowing the service to be accessible to Brazilian users according to Elon Musk.

Elon Musk on his X account highlighted that their local staff are not responsible for content moderation decisions and emphasized that the citizens of Brazil face a choice between democracy and the authority of Alexandre de Moraes.
