Egg Prices Skyrocket Amid Bird Flu Outbreak.

The news as it trends.

The prices of eggs and other food items have surged dramatically due to a severe bird flu outbreak that has devastated poultry supplies across the United States.

The avian flu, which began in early 2022, has led to the culling of millions of egg-laying hens, causing a significant shortage and driving up prices.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in December 2024, the national average price for a dozen eggs was $4.15, nearly double the price from the previous year.

In some regions, such as California, the price has soared to over $9 per dozen. Before the bird flu outbreak in early 2022, the average price for a dozen eggs was around $1.60.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that the bird flu has resulted in the death of close to 100 million chickens, turkeys, and other poultry since the outbreak began.

The impact of the bird flu outbreak extends beyond eggs.

The prices of other food items have also been affected due to inflation, labor shortages, and supply chain issues.

Consumers in stores like BJ’s and Costco are feeling the pinch at grocery stores, with many struggling to find affordable options for their daily needs.

At certain points, in some stores like BJ’s, customers were seen walking away due to the lack of availability of eggs based on the shortage.

Some also complained that the prices were extraordinarily high.

Experts warn that the situation may not improve soon, as the supply of egg-laying hens remains constrained.

The USDA predicts that while prices may eventually ease, they will likely stay above pre-outbreak levels through the third quarter of 2025.
