The news as it trends.

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has offered to accept deportees from the U.S. of any nationality, including violent American criminals currently imprisoned in the United States.

This unprecedented agreement was announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his visit to El Salvador.

Under this agreement, those currently being deported from the U.S. could find themselves in El Salvador, a country they do not belong to.

Critics have warned that the legality of deporting individuals of any nationality from the United States to El Salvador under this agreement is highly controversial and raises significant legal and ethical concerns.

In addition, deporting individuals to a country that is not their country of origin may violate international laws and treaties related to the rights of migrants and refugees.

There are also concerns about potential human rights violations if individuals are deported to a country where they may not have adequate protection or support.

Experts say such an agreement would likely face significant legal challenges in courts, as it may not be rooted in any existing legal provisions and could be seen as a violation of due process.

In El Salvador, there are currently more than 80,000 people jailed under the state of emergency declared by President Nayib Bukele.

The maximum-security prison, known as the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), is home to around 15,000 inmates and can hold up to 40,000.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, under the Trump administration, says they are pursuing this agreement with El Salvador to address several key objectives, including immigration control.

The aim is to reduce the number of migrants entering the U.S. by creating a “safe third country” agreement with El Salvador.

The Trump administration has faced significant criticism for its impact on human rights, especially with the dehumanization of migrant individuals and treating them in ways that violate their basic rights.

The administration argues that the agreement to deport people of different nationalities to a country they do not belong to, like El Salvador, is part of a broader strategy to fulfill campaign promises related to immigration and border security, which are key issues for the administration’s supporters.

However, it is unclear when Trump actually included this as part of his campaign promises and whether the implementation of this new agreement will stand based on international law.
