The news as it trends.
On April 24, 2025, the ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, categorically refuted the claim that the union had received money from the federal government.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) denied claims by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration that ₦50 billion had been released to settle earned academic allowances for university staff.
Professor Osodeke dismissed the announcement as verbal and unverified.
The ₦50 billion, if received, could significantly improve the welfare of university staff, stabilize academic calendars, and enhance the quality of education.
However, if the funds are not disbursed, some Nigerian policy analysts say the implications could be severe.
It may lead to renewed distrust between ASUU and the government, potential strikes, and disruptions in Nigeria’s education sector, further affecting students and staff alike.
The ongoing dispute, according to critics and advocacy groups in Nigeria, highlights the need for transparency and accountability in handling public funds, especially in critical sectors like education.
The publication was made known in a separate interview done by Sahara Reporters.
