The news as it trends.
Betty Akeredolu, the wife of the late Rotimi Akeredolu (former governor of Ondo State, Nigeria), expressed in an interview with the Nigerian media that her husband might still be alive if he had sought medical treatment instead of relying on spiritual practices.
Rotimi Akeredolu passed away from prostate cancer complications in December 2023.
Betty, a breast cancer survivor herself, emphasized the importance of medical intervention over spiritual healing.
She believes that her husband’s life could have been prolonged if he had followed her advice.
She questioned, “What came out of their mountain climbing, blessed handkerchiefs, water, olive oil, etc., from the GOs and all the noisy prayers like people possessed by demons?
If Aketi had listened to me, I wouldn’t be a widow,” she said. Betty, as she goes through her cancer treatment, advised that cancer should be seen as a medical issue, not a spiritual attack.
“You cannot pray away breast cancer or any cancer at all,” she asserted.
Betty mentioned in her interview that her late husband relied heavily on spiritual interventions and church activities instead of seeking medical treatment for his prostate cancer.
She believes that if he had prioritized medical care over spiritual practices, he might still be alive today.
As a breast cancer survivor, Betty Akeredolu has been very proactive in her approach to dealing with cancer.
She sought medical treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, where she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer with no lymph node involvement.
“no lymph node metastasis”.
This means that the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, which is generally a positive sign as it indicates that the cancer is likely still localized and hasn’t spread to other parts of the body.
Since her diagnosis, she has made significant lifestyle changes, including dietary adjustments and regular exercise.
According to reports, she has eliminated sugar, starchy foods, and processed drinks from her diet, and continues to embrace a diet rich in vegetables, smoothies, green tea, lemon and ginger tea, beans, fish, chicken, snails, and zobo drink.
Betty is also the founder of Team Survivors Nigeria (TSN), a community of breast cancer survivors providing psychosocial support and advocating for improved cancer care and awareness.
She continues to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and medical treatment for cancer.
Betty and Rotimi Akeredolu had four children together.
Rotimi Akeredolu served as the Governor of Ondo State from February 24, 2017, until his death on December 27, 2023.
Her interview has garnered more people online to think about medical intervention more than spiritual intervention, especially in Nigeria where more people trust their pastors over medical doctors.
What do you think about her efforts?
