A 26-year-old woman, Delfina Galvez, has surrendered to police after abandoning her newborn baby in a tote bag on a Bronx doorstep.
The incident occurred on December 29, 2024, when Galvez left the infant, wrapped in blankets, outside a home in the Longwood section of the Bronx.
Surveillance footage captured her placing the green tote bag on the sidewalk multiple times before leaving it behind2.
The baby was discovered by a neighbor who heard crying and immediately called 911.
The infant was taken to Jacobi Medical Center and is reported to be in stable condition3. Under New York’s safe haven laws, newborns can be left at designated locations like hospitals and firehouses without facing criminal charges, but Galvez’s actions did not comply with these regulations.
Galvez has been charged with reckless endangerment and child abandonment.
She is expected to be arraigned soon.
The community has expressed relief that the baby is safe and hopes for a positive outcome for both the child and the mother
