The news as it trends.
Many were seen wailing outside the job complex, pleading for mercy, as Benue State Governor Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia barred civil servants and commissioners from entering the state secretariat due to their late arrival.
The governor, recognized for his unannounced inspections, expressed his dissatisfaction with the prevalent lateness among state employees.
Upon arriving at the secretariat at approximately 10:35 am, Governor Alia discovered numerous offices unoccupied. Consequently, the gates were secured, preventing late arrivals, including senior officials, from gaining entry.
In addressing those locked out, Governor Alia remarked, “The work I do is not for me but for those who don’t know that I’m the governor and those who will see me and not even recognise me.
I have the powers to fire you, but I am speaking as a priest, not as a governor, to warn you of the dangers of what you are doing.”
The visibly frustrated governor conducted a tour of the secretariat, expressing concern over the absence of key officials.
He emphasized the importance of punctuality and dedication for effective governance, comparing the operations of the secretariat to managing a family, where adherence to rules is crucial.
Governor Alia further stated, “See what you can do to help if not yourselves, those people you are caring for and those behind you because they are the ones to take the heat of the circle you have created.”
This incident has ignited conversations throughout the state, with many commending the governor’s resolute approach to maintaining discipline.
