As the world awaited progress on ceasefire negotiations in Qatar, many Arab leaders were caught off guard by a shocking escalation.

On September 9, 2025, Israel launched an unprecedented airstrike on Doha, the capital of Qatar, targeting senior Hamas leaders who were reportedly gathered to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal.

The strike killed six people, including Humam al-Hayya, son of top Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya; Jihad Labad, al-Hayya’s chief of staff; three bodyguards; and a Qatari security officer.

Although Khalil al-Hayya and other senior negotiators survived, the timing and location of the attack were widely seen as a deliberate attempt to sabotage peace talks.

Following the debacle, condemnation poured in from across the Arab world and beyond.

Qatar labeled the strike a “cowardly attack” and a “blatant violation of international law,” warning that it endangered its sovereignty and role as a mediator. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey, Iran, Lebanon, and others called the attack reckless and destabilizing.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres described it as a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty.

Even President Trump issued rare criticism, calling the strike “unfortunate” and counterproductive to peace.

This strike marks a dangerous escalation—not only threatening ceasefire negotiations but also expanding the conflict into Gulf territory.

Arab leaders now see Netanyahu’s tactics as deliberate sabotage.

It remains to be seen what response will follow, but the region is no longer silent as it once was.
