“With the blessings of Avalokiteshvara, I hope to live another 30 or 40 years,”
he told followers during a long-life prayer ceremony in Dharamshala, India.

Dalai Lama, whose name is Tenzin Gyatso (born Lhamo Thondup), was born on July 6, 1935, in Tibet.
He is the 14th Dalai Lama and the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.
Recognized at age two as the reincarnation of his predecessor, he was enthroned in 1940 and assumed political power at 15.
In 1959, amid fears of arrest during a Chinese crackdown following a Tibetan uprising, he fled Tibet and settled in Dharamshala, India, where he continues to lead the Tibetan exile community.
A lifelong celibate monk, he has never married or had children.
