According to Malawi media reports, a plane carrying Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing after losing contact with aviation officials, leading to a search and rescue operation being initiated.
The Malawi Defense Force aircraft took off from Lilongwe on Monday morning but disappeared from radar shortly after departure. It was supposed to arrive at Mzuzu International Airport at 10:00 local time.
President Lazarus Chakwera has decided to cancel his trip to the Bahamas in order to supervise the ongoing search efforts.
The President’s office has released a statement confirming the incident and ensuring the public that a comprehensive search operation is currently in progress.
The missing aircraft had a total of ten individuals on board, including the Vice-President and military personnel. Despite attempts by aviation officials to establish contact, all endeavors have been unsuccessful thus far.
The search operation is being spearheaded by the Malawi Defense Force, with assistance from both regional and national agencies.
The nation remains on high alert as the search mission continues. The reason behind the disappearance remains unknown, prompting an investigation to be launched. Citizens are advised to stay composed and await further updates from the authorities.
