The news as it trends.
Food allergies can be life-threatening, and for 78-year-old grandmother Margaret Jean Bryant, a mislabeled cookie had devastating consequences.
Bryant, who had a severe peanut allergy, unknowingly consumed a peanut butter cookie that was mislabeled as an oatmeal raisin cookie at Safeway store.
Within minutes, she experienced anaphylaxis—a rapid, life-threatening allergic reaction. Despite swift medical intervention, she tragically passed away in less than an hour.
In the wake of the heartbreaking incident, Bryant’s grieving family has filed a lawsuit against Safeway, alleging that the mislabeling directly caused her fatal reaction.
Legal documents state that she was unaware the cookie contained peanuts, and by the time she realized, it was too late.
Albertsons Companies, Safeway’s parent organization, has since issued a recall for the mislabeled cookies that were sold.
Bryant’s family hopes their legal action will bring awareness to the dangers of food mislabeling, hold companies more accountable, and push for enhanced safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.
