Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), along with his affiliates, has issued a warning regarding potential mass protests and industrial actions should he face any form of mistreatment from the police.
The leadership of the NLC gathered on Tuesday to discuss the police’s summons directed at Ajaero, who is currently under investigation for serious allegations, including financing terrorism and committing treasonable felonies.
While the police requested his presence that morning, the NLC asserted that the claims against him are unfounded and sought an extension for Ajaero to respond to the invitation.
In a formal statement, the NLC emphasized its commitment to the rule of law and due process, indicating that while it would comply with the police’s request, it would also demand additional time due to the serious nature of the allegations.
The National Executive Council (NEC) instructed all affiliates and state councils to begin mobilizing their members nationwide, asserting that the Congress would take decisive action, including mass protests and strikes, to safeguard the integrity of the labor movement.
Furthermore, the NEC called upon civil society and the general public to unite in solidarity with the NLC during this critical juncture, highlighting the collective struggle against injustice and the importance of defending democratic values.
