The news as it trends.
A growing controversy has erupted in Abuja after Mairiga Hassan Shaharu, a staff member of the Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) was allegedly detained for leaking documents suggesting that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike allocated over 3,800 hectares of public land to his two sons, Jordan and Joaquin Wike.
The documents, first reported by Peoples Gazette, sparked outrage nationwide.
However, the detention of Mairiga has raised even more serious concerns about abuse of power and due process.
According to Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mairiga was arrested on the orders of Wike’s Chief Security Officer and held at the FCDA Police Post in Abuja.
Sowore claims the court order used to detain Mairiga was forged, allegedly signed by a magistrate who no longer presides in that jurisdiction.
Mairiga reportedly works in the Fresh Applications Unit of AGIS and does not have access to the internal systems responsible for land allocations, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the accusations.
Despite legal intervention, police refused to release him, stating the matter was now under the control of FCT Police Commissioner CP Wale Ajao, who has faced criticism in other politically sensitive detentions.
Critics are asking: if the land allocation never happened, why detain someone for leaking documents that supposedly don’t exist?
