The news as it trends.
Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani has announced a personal trip to Uganda to celebrate his recent marriage with family and friends.
Born in Kampala, Mamdani lived in Uganda until age five and holds dual citizenship.
His visit comes just weeks after winning the Democratic primary in New York City and follows online criticism urging him to “go back to Africa”—a sentiment he cheekily addressed in a video, saying, “I hear you, and I agree.”
Mamdani emphasized the trip is personal, not political, and promised to return by the end of July.
The move has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising Mamdani’s authenticity and others questioning the timing.
Still, having put in the work, built momentum, and earned public support, Mamdani remains a frontrunner in the upcoming election.
