Trials in the Spotlight

The news as it trends. See the video below.

The tragic stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, on April 2, 2025, has ignited not only a criminal case but also a firestorm of public outrage, misinformation, and racial tension.

At the center is Karmelo Anthony, also 17 at the time, who now faces a first-degree murder charge after allegedly stabbing Metcalf during a brief confrontation under a team tent.

According to court documents, Karmelo Anthony — an African American student from Frisco Centennial High School — was sitting under a tent designated for Frisco Memorial High School athletes.

It was reportedly raining, and he may have been seeking shelter under that tent.

Austin Metcalf, a white student from Memorial, approached and told him to leave.

Karmelo allegedly responded, “Touch me and see what happens.”

When Metcalf made physical contact, Karmelo pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed him once in the chest.

Metcalf died in his twin brother’s arms.

The two teens did not know each other, and the entire incident unfolded in under 30 seconds.

Karmelo was arrested at the scene and reportedly told officers, “I did it… I was protecting myself.”

His legal team maintains he acted in self-defense, and a trial date has not yet been set.

Meanwhile, Karmelo’s family has come under fire for raising over $500,000 on GiveSendGo to support legal fees, relocation, and trauma counseling.

Viral posts accused them of misusing the funds — claiming they bought a house and car — despite no verified evidence.

In fact, Karmelo’s mother, Kaya Hayes, publicly stated:

“No funds have been released yet. We haven’t touched a dime.”

Despite this, the family has faced death threats, racial harassment, and online abuse.

Their spokesperson has called the backlash a product of white supremacy, arguing that the family is being vilified before any trial has taken place.

The case has become a cultural flashpoint, drawing comparisons to other controversial self-defense cases and raising questions about race, justice, and media bias.
