Around the World.

The news as it trends.

A dream vacation turned into a nightmare for the family of Taariyen, a young man from North Carolina who nearly drowned while swimming in Mexico.

According to his aunt, water entered his mask, causing him to lose consciousness.

He was rushed to a Mexican hospital and placed on life support, suffering multiple strokes and broken ribs from CPR.

With no travel insurance and limited medical coverage abroad, the family had to pay $10,000 out of pocket to airlift him back to the U.S.

His girlfriend’s family and the local community helped raise the funds, and a GoFundMe campaign has since raised over $15,000.

Now recovering in a Miami hospital, Taariyen is breathing on his own.

His story is a sobering reminder of the importance of travel insurance and knowing where your nearest U.S. embassy is when traveling abroad.

The fundraiser was organized by his mother, Cindy Hailey.
