In the USA.
The news as it trends.
President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a $200 million ballroom extension to the White House, set to begin construction in September 2025.
The 90,000-square-foot addition will replace the East Wing and host up to 650 guests for state dinners and official events.
While critics initially feared taxpayer involvement, the White House clarified that Trump and his private donors will cover the full cost.
The design, inspired by Trump’s Mar-a-Lago ballroom, features gold trim and classical architecture.
Offices in the East Wing, including the First Lady’s, will be temporarily relocated during construction.
Supporters hail the project as a personal legacy that doesn’t burden taxpayers.
However, opponents question its necessity during times of national challenge.
Critics argue that allowing private individuals to fund major expansions of government buildings could set a troubling precedent—one where public spaces are shaped by private wealth and agendas.
Some go further, warning this may open the door to a new level of corruption where ultra-wealthy donors influence not only the infrastructure but the policies that emerge from within it.
