The news as it trend
In one of the most surreal wildlife smuggling cases to hit Kuala Lumpur International Airport, an Indian national was arrested while attempting to board a flight to Bengaluru—with over 2,500 live turtles hidden in his luggage.
Authorities, acting on intelligence, intercepted the man during a routine scan and discovered the turtles crammed into suitcases.
Most of them were Red-eared Sliders, a species valued at approximately $82,000 but considered invasive in India, where they pose a threat to native aquatic ecosystems.
The animals were seized, and an investigation was launched under Malaysia’s Wildlife Conservation Act and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act.
Malaysia has increasingly become a hotspot for illegal wildlife trafficking, serving as a key transit hub for smugglers moving exotic animals across borders.
This case not only exposed the cruelty of wildlife smuggling but also the urgent need for stronger enforcement and public awareness.
