Tensions are rising in Edo State after Governor Monday Okpebholo issued a controversial warning to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, declaring he must not enter the state without prior permission or security clearance.
The statement came during a political rally on July 18, 2025, where Okpebholo linked Obi’s recent visit to Benin—during which he donated ₦15 million to a nursing school—to a surge in violence that reportedly left three people dead.
Critics, including the Obidient Movement, condemned the remarks as unconstitutional and dangerous, citing Nigeria’s guaranteed right to free movement under Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution.
The incident has sparked national debate over political intolerance, security overreach, and the limits of gubernatorial authority in a democratic society.
