The Nigerian World
The news as it trends.
In a rare show of empathy, Senator Tony Nwoye of Anambra North has appointed Justina Azuka—the widow of slain lawmaker Justice Azuka—as his Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties.
This comes less than 24 hours after she lost her bid to succeed her late husband in the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency bye-election.
Justina ran under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with hopes of continuing her husband’s legacy and securing a future for their three children.
Despite a strong campaign, she was defeated by APGA’s Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe.
Rather than letting her fade into political obscurity, Senator Nwoye stepped in with an appointment that includes a ₦200,000 monthly salary.
A photo of Nwoye handing her the appointment letter has gone viral, sparking praise across social media.
Many see this as a powerful example of compassion in Nigerian politics, where empathy is often overshadowed by rivalry.
Justice Azuka, Justina’s late husband, was kidnapped and later killed in a tragic incident that shocked the community.
His death left behind a grieving family and a constituency in mourning—prompting Justina to run for his former seat.
As one Anambra resident put it, “This is the kind of humanity our leaders should show.”
