The news as it trends

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, has finally addressed the widely debated renaming of Lagos’ iconic Charly Boy Bus Stop.

In a candid exchange with entertainer Charly Boy, Obi dismissed the move as trivial in the face of Nigeria’s pressing economic woes.

“To me, it is totally irrelevant when you have millions of people who don’t know where their next meal will come from,” he remarked.

He emphasized his commitment to public-focused governance with a personal anecdote:

“I built a facility in a hospital, and the owner said it should be named after me or my mother. I declined. I never commissioned any project or named anything after myself because they were done with public money. That’s why some people say I didn’t do much publicity as governor.”

Obi’s words have resonated with many of his supporters who view meaningful leadership as grounded in service—not self-promotion.

The debate opens more dialogue on the ongoing tension between symbolism and substance in public office.
