The news as it trends

In a bizarre and troubling breach of privacy, a private hospital in Thailand has been fined 1.21 million baht (US$37,000) after over 1,000 pages of patient records were discovered being used as wrappers for street food.

The scandal erupted when an online influencer posted images of grilled snacks wrapped in documents containing sensitive medical information—including one identifying a patient with hepatitis B.

The hospital had outsourced the destruction of these files to a small family-run business, which failed to properly dispose of them.

Instead, the papers were stored at home and leaked into public circulation.

The incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stricter data protection protocols.

Thai authorities also fined the disposal contractor and emphasized the need for accountability under the country’s Personal Data Protection Act.
