Around the world.

The news as it trends.

Some say this could set a new precedent for how First Ladies are held accountable.

Making headlines today, South Korea’s former First Lady, Kim Keon Hee, has been indicted under detention on multiple charges, including stock manipulation, bribery, and violations of political funding laws.

It is the first time in the country’s history that a presidential spouse has faced criminal indictment and arrest.

Kim allegedly earned over 8 billion won (approximately $57.7 million) through a stock fraud scheme involving Deutsch Motors.

She is also accused of accepting luxury gifts—diamond necklaces and Chanel handbags—from the Unification Church, via a shaman, in exchange for political favors.

The phrase “via a shaman” refers to the involvement of a spiritual figure who acts as a mediator between the physical and spiritual worlds.

In this case, the gifts were allegedly delivered through a shaman, serving as an intermediary between the Unification Church and Kim.

Such gift acceptance violates South Korea’s laws prohibiting officials from receiving gifts while in office.

She also reportedly conducted unpaid political opinion polls worth billions of won, breaching campaign finance laws.

Her husband, former President Yoon Suk Yeol, previously impeached, is also facing trial.

As the case unfolds, many in South Korea believe it could reshape public trust in institutions and redefine accountability for those in power.
